EORI Scoping Tool

The EORI Scoping Tool is designed to identify fields in Wyoming that are likely candidates for profitable undertaking of CO2-EOR, and that therefore warrant the additional study and engineering analysis needed before making a final commitment to CO2-EOR.  The initial implementation of the tool is for the Powder River Basin.

Underlying the tool is a relational database of field attributes and price/cost parameters that are used in the economic analysis.  This database has been populated using published values from the Wyoming Geologic Association, SPE, AAPG, and other sources.  In cases where multiple opinions exist on attributes or parameters, the database allows for storage of all of these, and associates a reference with each data entry.

For any given field/reservoir combination, the Scoping Tool projects the likely response to CO2-EOR based on the historical response of analogous reservoirs to CO2 flooding.  More specifically, the tool projects, for given quantities of CO2 and water injected over time, the induced quantity of incremental oil recovered, as well as the induced requirements for recycling and reinjection of CO2.  These projections are then used to estimate incremental capital costs and operating expenses associated with the CO2-EOR project, as well as incremental revenues.  Capital costs include the cost of laying a CO2 pipeline, upgrading field facilities, and building a CO2 recycling plant; operating expenses include the cost of purchasing CO2 and powering the CO2 recyling plant.

When applied to a single field, the tool can be used to compare the likely profitability of CO2-EOR under various economic scenarios that differ in their assumptions about the CO2-EOR response, the design of the flood, the cost of CO2, and the price of oil.

When applied to a larger set of fields, the tool can be used to compare such scenarios in terms of the likely demand for CO2 by all fields that can profitably undertake CO2-EOR, the resulting boost to oil production, and the economic benefit to both producers and the State of Wyoming.
